Europa Nostra UK webinar Thursday 23 May – Cleveland Pools, Bath

May 14, 2024 Published by Alex McCoskrie

Europa Nostra UK’s webinar series features winners of the prestigious Europa Nostra Awards. The sixth webinar, introduced by Paul Simons, will celebrate the 2023 winning entry, the Cleveland Pools in Bath, which forms a component of two World Heritage inscriptions, the City of Bath WHS and the more recent Great Spa Towns of Europe WHS.

The pools are the oldest open air public swimming pools in the UK probably even in western Europe and are Grade 2* listed. Dating to the 19th-century, the pools had a significant place in the hearts of the people of Bath and the surrounding region but remained closed and disused since the 1980s.

This unique historic site with a rich cultural heritage underwent a comprehensive restoration. The Cleveland Pools Trust embarked on the journey of restoration in 2004 and reopened the site to the public; however the Trust is increasingly aware of the impact of climate change, including how they are now facing a complex situation following this winter’s floods which has temporarily closed the Pools.

Join us as their Trustees share how they achieved their goal, what lessons they have learnt and what impact this project has had.

The webinar takes place on Thursday 23 May 2024 17:30 – 18:30 BST.
