Number 4 in a series of 4 webinar talks, showcasing some of the UK’s World Heritage Sites and their work in tackling the impacts of climate change.

World Heritage Site – The English Lake District

The English Lake District World Heritage Site was inscribed as a world heritage site in 2017 and is a large site of 229.205 hectares located in the north of England. It contains two world heritage sites The English Lake District and Frontiers of the Roman Empire. It is a complex site with a very large number of landowners, national and international designations. The resident population is 40,478 with 19.89 million visitors. The site was inscribed under criteria (ii) Interchange of ideas (discovery and appreciation of a rich cultural landscape; Criterion (v) Human interaction with the environment Continuity of traditional agro-pastoralism and local industry in a spectacular mountain landscape and; criterion (vi) ideas of Universal significance development of a model for protecting cultural landscapes.

Speaker – the WHS Coordinator Mairi Lock

Mairi Lock is the World Heritage Site Coordinator for the English Lake District WHS. She worked as a Cartographer for a survey company before becoming a Planner. She has worked as a Planner in the public sector for 28 years before taking up her current coordinator role in July 2018 and has worked for the Lake District National Park for the last 22 years. Her role is to provide advice to the Lake District National Park Partnership and Lake District National Park Authority and others on matters relating to world heritage and liaise with other world heritage sites and with other organisations, NGOs and government departments and UNESCO relating to the English Lakes District WHS.

In her spare-time she enjoys walking and fibre crafts such as spinning, weaving, felting and knitting.

Webinars run 7 to 8pm, and are held on Zoom. Zoom details usually sent out latest the day before the webinar.

Single webinar tickets are £5 each. A series ticket for all 4 webinars is £15. Tickets are available up to 4pm the day before.

Each webinar is recorded and uploaded to WHUK’s private YouTube channel. All ticket holders will be sent a link to the video, to revisit or catch up if the live talk was missed.
