Saltaire is a unique and internationally significant model of 19th-century industrial philanthropic model-village, recognised globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are looking for an exceptional and dynamic leader to Chair their voluntary governing body and steer the WHS into its next critical phase.

This is a high-profile, influential, and voluntary strategic leadership role, requiring a deep commitment to preserving and promoting the Outstanding Universal Value of Saltaire.

The opportunity – the new Chair will join at a crucial time. Your primary mandate will be to drive the creation and implementation of a new, forward-looking WHS Management Plan. You will be the essential figure in coordinating stakeholders and ensuring the plan successfully addresses the challenges and opportunities of a living WHS.

Key responsibilities – as Chair, you will be the definitive voice and leader for the Saltaire WHS, specifically responsible for:

  1. Strategic Leadership: provide clear, focused direction for the Steering Group, ensuring effective governance, oversight, and accountability in line with UNESCO’s requirements.
  2. Ambassador and Advocate: act as the chief public advocate and ambassador for the WHS, building relationships with key governmental bodies, conservation agencies, regional partners, and the wider community to secure resources and support.
  3. Management Plan Delivery: lead the committee in successfully formulating and adopting the new Management Plan, focusing on the long-term conservation, sustainable development, and interpretation of the OUV.
  4. Community Engagement: champion the vital connection between the WHS and its residents. Saltaire is particularly interested in candidates with a proven commitment to deep and inclusive community engagement to ensure the WHS benefits all who live, work and visit here.

They are looking for someone who:

  • – Possesses proven strategic leadership and governance experience in a complex multi-stakeholder environment (e.g., charity, public sector, or cultural heritage).
  • – Demonstrates exceptional ambassadorial, influencing, and negotiation skills to effectively represent the WHS at local, national and international levels.
  • – Has a genuine passion for the conservation of cultural or natural heritage, preferably with an understanding of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and its Operational Guidelines.
  • – Is a proactive problem-solver and driver of change who can motivate a diverse voluntary committee toward ambitious goals.
  • – Has a strong track record or expressed interest in fostering community partnership and ensuring heritage is accessible and relevant to local people.

Commitment – this is a voluntary role. The Chair is expected to commit approximately 1-2 days per month for meetings, preparation, and external representation, including attendance at approximately four formal Governing Body meetings per year, plus extraordinary sessions and key public events.
