Saltaire is a unique and internationally significant model of 19th-century industrial philanthropic model-village, recognised globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are looking for an exceptional and dynamic leader to Chair their voluntary governing body and steer the WHS into its next critical phase.
This is a high-profile, influential, and voluntary strategic leadership role, requiring a deep commitment to preserving and promoting the Outstanding Universal Value of Saltaire.
The opportunity – the new Chair will join at a crucial time. Your primary mandate will be to drive the creation and implementation of a new, forward-looking WHS Management Plan. You will be the essential figure in coordinating stakeholders and ensuring the plan successfully addresses the challenges and opportunities of a living WHS.
Key responsibilities – as Chair, you will be the definitive voice and leader for the Saltaire WHS, specifically responsible for:
- Strategic Leadership: provide clear, focused direction for the Steering Group, ensuring effective governance, oversight, and accountability in line with UNESCO’s requirements.
- Ambassador and Advocate: act as the chief public advocate and ambassador for the WHS, building relationships with key governmental bodies, conservation agencies, regional partners, and the wider community to secure resources and support.
- Management Plan Delivery: lead the committee in successfully formulating and adopting the new Management Plan, focusing on the long-term conservation, sustainable development, and interpretation of the OUV.
- Community Engagement: champion the vital connection between the WHS and its residents. Saltaire is particularly interested in candidates with a proven commitment to deep and inclusive community engagement to ensure the WHS benefits all who live, work and visit here.
They are looking for someone who:
- – Possesses proven strategic leadership and governance experience in a complex multi-stakeholder environment (e.g., charity, public sector, or cultural heritage).
- – Demonstrates exceptional ambassadorial, influencing, and negotiation skills to effectively represent the WHS at local, national and international levels.
- – Has a genuine passion for the conservation of cultural or natural heritage, preferably with an understanding of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and its Operational Guidelines.
- – Is a proactive problem-solver and driver of change who can motivate a diverse voluntary committee toward ambitious goals.
- – Has a strong track record or expressed interest in fostering community partnership and ensuring heritage is accessible and relevant to local people.
Commitment – this is a voluntary role. The Chair is expected to commit approximately 1-2 days per month for meetings, preparation, and external representation, including attendance at approximately four formal Governing Body meetings per year, plus extraordinary sessions and key public events.
