Durham Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site 2018 lecture series announced

After a very successful and challenging 2017 season of lectures on the theme of Heritage at Risk, we are now returning closer to home, to look at the setting in which our World Heritage Site sits. Please join us to find out how the landscape around us forms an integral part of what makes us a World Heritage Site.

Here is a calendar with some provisional dates for the early part of 2018:

·         Weds 24th January, 6pm PG20 Pemberton Rooms. Martin Roberts “Landscapes of Supply: the Medieval Granges of Durham Cathedral Priory”

·         Weds 28th February, 5.30pm Palace Green Library. IMEMS Annual World Heritage Lecture. Dr Dee Dyas, University of York. “A sense of place? Pilgrimages and the senses, past, present and future.” To book this event, please visit www.dur.ac.uk/imems/events

·         Thurs 15th March, 6pm PG20 Pemberton Rooms. Chris Woodley-Stewart, Director of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership. “The North Pennines Geopark – Durham’s nearest neighbour in the UNESCO designated sites of the UK”

·         Tues 1st May, 6pm PG20 Pemberton Rooms. Gemma Lewis, Curator, Durham Castle and Museum of Archaeology. “Power and planning, visual representations of Durham castle through the ages”

·         Early June, Jonathan Larwood, Senior Specialist, Geology and Palaeontology, Natural England. “Culturally natural or naturally cultural, exploring the relationship between nature and culture through World Heritage”

·         Lectures after the summer vacation will be confirmed in Spring 2018
