Conserving Underwater Heritage

August 27, 2025 Published by Alex McCoskrie

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) has recently published guidance on conserving underwater heritage. Though aimed primarily for Scottish heritage, the guidance might be useful to those from outside of Scotland too.

The document is part of a series of non-statutory guidance notes about managing change in the historic environment. They explain how to apply the policies in the Historic Environment Policy for Scotland.

This guidance is primarily for practitioners and decision-makers who encounter underwater heritage in the course of their duties, as well as those who want to understand the impacts of a proposed change.

This is a practical guide on how to assess and manage the impacts of change while respecting the cultural significance of underwater heritage.
