ICOMOS-UK’s Annual Christmas Lecture & Drinks Reception

November 24, 2022 Published by Alex McCoskrie

ICOMOS-UK is returning to its programme of in-person events following the pandemic with their Christmas lecture at the events space at their offices at Cowcross Street in London. This is a hybrid event, and information about booking tickets will follow in a later message. ICOMOS-UK are fortunate to have secured Professor Christoph Mick to give their annual lecture. He will speak on the subject:

The fight for the past: Contested heritage and the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Christoph Mick, Professor of Modern European History at the University of Warwick

Friday 9th December 2022 – 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Hybrid event: In person at The Gallery at Alan Baxter, 77 Cowcross Street, London, and online via zoom.

This very topical and important talk will explore Russian and Ukrainian conflicting views of the past. Some sites, such as the L’viv and Kyiv World Heritage sites are equally important for both Ukrainians and Russians and control over them can become a major aim of the conflict. It will also discuss what impact the conflict has had on monuments and heritage sites, including the deliberate destruction of monuments and the capture and removal of artefacts and relics.

The talk will be followed by a drinks reception.
