The upcoming World Heritage UK workshop on 6th and 7th March promises to be a masterclass in commercial best practice for world heritage sites, with three senior experts from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew sharing their expertise with those attending.

Richard-Deverell1After the privilege of a behind-the-scenes tour of some of Kew’s yet-to-be-opened exhibits, delegates will hear from the head of the organisation, Chief Executive and Director of RBG Kew, Richard Deverell.

The Head of Commercial Activities at Kew Enterprises, Adam Farrar, will then talk about the ‘Evolution of Kew’s commercial strategy and major events – the difficulties, opportunities and benefits’.Adam_Farrer

This will be followed on the second day by the Director of Estates and Capital Development at Kew Gardens, Andrew Williams, who will present a particular case study on one of Kew’s most recent attractions,  ‘The Hive – delivery challenges’.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        This fantastic opportunity to hear from such eminent presenters wandrew williamsill provide the perfect context for the rest of the discussions which will be carried out in small groups in three workshop sessions, where participants, many experts in their own right, will share their own experiences and skills, exploring how they identify their customer markets, how they have developed their own commercial packages and how they then get on and deliver them.

There are just a few weeks left to book for the eagerly anticipated Communicating World Heritage Conference which will take place at the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site from 7 to 10 October 2017. Tickets for the conference, and accommodation close to the venue, are being booked up quickly so don’t miss your chance to join a growing group of professionals, academics and practitioners to explore the many ways of communicating World Heritage to a variety of audiences, and discuss the latest research and global policy in relation to key themes such as World Heritage tourism, communities, education and specialist groups.

Programme Highlights

We are delighted to be welcoming such a diverse and exciting group of speakers from organisations such as UNESCO, Historic England and the Heritage Alliance, as well as leading academics from around the world. Their specialist knowledge and expertise will provide a unique cross-disciplinary perspective on the communication of World Heritage, and a range of interesting talking points for colleagues throughout the conference.

Our full programme is available on the conference website, and a few of the many highlights over the four days include:

Michael Di Giovine, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Professor Di Giovani will present “Communicating Sustainability through World Heritage Tourism,” examining the ways in which world heritage practitioners can engage with tourism to communicate sustainability values to a diversity of audiences. (Saturday 7th October).

Dr. Sophia Labadi, Senior Lecturer and co-Director of the Centre for Heritage at the University of Kent (UK). Dr Labadi will present the paper “For Everyone? Communicating World Heritage values and Stake Holders.” This presentation will explore how the World Heritage terminology is difficult to understand, even for specialists, making it even more difficult to communicate to the public. There will be a focus on how communities are increasingly associating World Heritage with exclusions and how these communities have acted upon these exclusionary trends. Finally, Dr Labadi will examine the approaches that aim to bring about solutions to these issues. (Sunday 8th October)

Andrew Stokes, England Director for Visit England will join the join the ‘Heritage Leaders’ session to present the latest information on the value of World Heritage to the tourism market and how this can be communicated. (Monday 9th October).

Mr Bo Jiang, Vice President of ICOMOS-China and Mr Yimeng Zhang, Great Wall Protection Project at the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, will be giving presentations about two icons of World Heritage, the Silk Road and the Great Wall of China. This is a rare opportunity to hear speakers from this country on their specialist subjects and will provide great insight into communicating World Heritage with the wider world. (Tuesday 10th October).

In the ‘Communicating with business and funders’ session of the conference we are pleased to have the new Chief Executive of the Blenheim Palace World Heritage Site, Dominic Hare, as a speaker. Blenheim Palace is a great example of a successful World Heritage business and is particularly imaginative and creative in its thinking and practice. For the last 14 years, Dominic has served as Finance Director at Blenheim Palace and was appointed Chief Executive Officer for the Blenheim Estate in January 2017.

New Lanark Networking Meeting success

The second of World Heritage UK’s annual networking meetings took place at the New Lanark Mills World Heritage Site in July. Over 30 delegates enjoyed exploring this remarkable place between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and hearing presentations from a variety of knowledgeable speakers.copyright HES

The theme of the meeting was ‘Running the Business of World Heritage’ and there was plenty of commercial experience to share from UK and international WHS examples. We heard about the visitor centres at Stonehenge in Wiltshire and the Al Falaj in Oman, masterplanning at Kew Gardens and financial strategy at Fountains Abbey, telling the story at Durham Cathedral, customer experience at Edinburgh Castle and ‘big picture’ visioning at New Lanark itself. Plenty of discussion time too and the networking was enhanced with fine food at the Mill One Hotel restaurant.

Blenheim Palace wins Great China Welcome Award

Blenheim Palace has won national recognition for its positive approach to welcoming visitors from China.

Blenheim_PalaceThe Oxfordshire UNESCO World Heritage Site was presented with the GREAT China Welcome award at VisitEngland’s prestigious Awards for Excellence event held at the Hilton Waldorf Hotel in London on Monday.

The GREAT China welcome programme aims to make Britain the destination of choice for the rapidly-growing Chinese market.

Blenheim Palace’s Operations Director, Heather Carter said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award. Blenheim Palace is a living, changing experience with a wealth of events, themed tours and exhibitions throughout the year, and welcomes millions of visitors both from the UK and overseas. We were the first stately home to sign up for the GREAT China Charter and we are committed to developing our Chinese market.

“Blenheim is continually looking at innovative ways to improve and adapt the visitor experience to appeal to Chinese tourists and to underline the fact we are ‘China ready’,” she added.

Among the initiatives currently in place are Chinese guide books and guides, an audio guide and map on their website, a Mandarin speaking waitress in the Orangery and a menu in Mandarin. All staff also have the opportunity to enrol in Mandarin Chinese language classes free of charge.The team are about to produce audio recordings of some of the Palace and Gardens tours in a variety of languages; including Chinese.

Blenheim Palace was also among the first major UK heritage visitor attractions to accept UnionPay, the most widely used bank debit card throughout China and South East Asia.In addition to its on-site initiatives.  Blenheim Palace works with a number of Chinese travel groups, tour operators and trade missions in China.

At the centre of the programme is the GREAT China Welcome Charter which helps Chinese visitors to easily identify hotels, attractions, retailers and tour operators that are making themselves ‘China-ready’ by providing information in Mandarin or Cantonese and adapting their products for the Chinese market and culture.

Built in the early 18th century to celebrate Britain’s victory over the French in the War of the Spanish Succession, Blenheim Palace is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.

punlm211008001_o1 CropFollowing on from the success of last year’s World Heritage UK Networking Meeting at the Giant’s Causeway WHS, this year we move to Scotland and the unique and successful New Lanark WHS where we plan to share our experiences on ‘running the business of World Heritage’. So, a commercial theme this year and this is appropriate as the operation at New Lanark is an exemplar. There will be opportunities to learn from each other as we hear from world heritage colleagues on their experiences of business plans and strategies, innovative enterprises and products, hospitality and customer satisfaction and the interpretation of the offer that each World Heritage Site provides to sustain it as a viable and sustainable business. The event will also include a World Heritage UK General Meeting to meet the governance requirements of the charity.

The meeting will take place in the Bonnington Linn Conference Room at the New Lanark Mill Hotel on the 4th and 5th July where a limited amount of accommodation has been reserved for delegates.
