World Heritage UK wins National Lottery support

World Heritage UK has received a National Lottery grant of £100,000 for its ‘Unlocking the Potential’ project. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the funding provides essential support to achieve World Heritage UK’s Vision, where ‘the UK will have a coherent approach to World Heritage Sites, which will be better known, understood, and supported through sustainable funding so they can provide inspiration, learning and enjoyment for society’.

The UK has 31 UNESCO World Heritage Sites which collectively tell our island story. They include Neolithic monuments, palaces, cathedrals, castles, entire cities, stunning natural coastline and pioneering industrial heritage. Individually they can be a challenge to manage, but as an outstanding collection World Heritage UK works to raise their profile, advocate for support and resource, promote their values and facilitate networking, training and sharing of good practice. Grant funding allows World Heritage UK to become more sustainable, strengthening the organisation with costs of new staff, professional guidance for improved governance, strategy and business development, fundraising, marketing, communication and training.

World Heritage UK, with the valuable assistance of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, can step up and fully fulfil that role.”

Vanessa Harbar, Head of National Lottery Heritage Fund West Midlands, said “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, this project will help strengthen World Heritage UK and ensure that the county’s rich and fascinating heritage is better managed, protected and shared with local people and visitors.”

World Heritage UK is the only organisation exclusively focused on World Heritage in the UK, and the only one led by the World Heritage Sites themselves, reflecting a community-driven approach that has proven effective at many sites and which is favoured by UNESCO.

Valentina Sabucco 2Hi, my name is Valentina Sabucco, a post-graduate student from Newcastle University on a placement at the Durham Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site.

World Heritage UK is currently preparing a bid to apply for a Heritage Lottery Fund Resilient Heritage grant and I am helping to organise a survey for your input to help guide the application. Will you help me?

World Heritage UK aims to become a more sustainable and resilient organisation, improving our professional skills and offering the chance for everyone who is interested and passionate about heritage to bring his/her contribution to the organisation.

World Heritage UK Workshop “An Introduction to Fundraising Targets and
Techniques”
World Heritage UK was pleased to support a Giving to Heritage workshop run in London
at the end of November. This was specifically targeted for World Heritage Site Co-
ordinators and provided an introductory insight to fundraising and support from the
private and philanthropic sectors, a new approach to many of us who are more used to
seeking funding from public sources such as Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) or EU
programmes.
Giving to Heritage is a joint venture between The Heritage Alliance and the Institute of
Fundraising, made possible through a funding programme with HLF. This is a capacity
building programme designed to increase the fundraising capabilities of those working in
the heritage sector; training can be delivered through specifically targeted workshops
such as this, and through one-to-one consultancy sessions and webinars. The WHS
training workshop was attended by 14 delegates and was delivered by Valentine Morby
who has direct experience of working with WHSs through work he has done previously in
Bath and currently with the Jurassic Coast Trust.

The session looked at what an organisation needs to have in place before approaching
and private sector donor – a strong vision, robust business plan and fundraising and
communications strategies. The importance of developing and maintaining long-term
relationships with donors was emphasised and to be clear about exactly what you wish
them to fund, and then build your case. This should be capable of being briefly
summarised through its features, advantages and benefits (the FAB approach) or
through the four pillars of vison (what you wish to do), enemy (what is stopping you), hero
(who can deliver) and recipient (who will benefit).
The clear message in approaching donors is to be clear, compelling, concise and
convincing – a message that everyone went away with!
